Duarte’s Tavern in sleepy Pescadero, half way between Santa Cruz and San Francisco, has been serving hungry and thirsty customers since 1894. Pescadero is a one-street town nestled between coastal redwoods and the ocean, with weather worn houses on rambling properties, surrounded by green meadows. A cemetery sits right outside of town, across a creek, waiting to be explored on foot. Pescadero, with its Victorian farmhouses, green pastures, the smell of the ocean in the air, is rural California at its best. Duarte’s delicious ollalieberry pie, artichoke ravioli, and abalone sandwiches, served by the same family for 118 years, reflect the bounty of the nearby sea and the surrounding agricultural fields.
Duarte’s is a favorite meeting place for my family, which is spread out between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. Last week we celebrated my grandmother’s 96th birthday at Duarte’s with champagne, swirled cream of artichoke and cream of green chile soups, seafood, and pie a la mode. It was fitting that the restaurant has been around longer than grandma, a claim few local haunts can make.

So our next trip to Pescadero, we are going to Duarte's! I LOVE LOVE LOVE abalone in all ways. The sandwiches sound divine and delicious. Can't wait to try them! Are they all year round?
ReplyDeleteThe only problem eating at Duarte's is choosing what to eat. They've got a great menu, and it always features abalone. I'll take you there for sure.
